A Shower Shelf Held Up by the Taps

Shower storage for renters is a parade of bad compromises. Suction cups eventually surrender, adhesive mounts are only notionally removable, and caddies hanging from the shower head put a cluttered collection of bottles at face height.

So I had PCBWay fabricate a shelf from a single piece of 4 mm aluminium sheet. It cost about A$200 including shipping, which is absurd for a shower shelf and entirely reasonable for never having to think about shower shelves again. It is wide, essentially indestructible in ordinary use and, most importantly, sits at waist height rather than in our faces.

This render is very close to the shelf's actual position in our shower. The tap spacing and the alcove determine where it belongs.

The mount was already there

The shelf's back plate fits over the two tap bodies. Their threaded conical covers then screw back into place in front of it, trapping the aluminium against the tiled wall. No holes, adhesive or additional brackets are needed, and removal reverses the same operation.

That arrangement gives the shelf two widely spaced mounting points. The load from the bottles passes through the shelf's rear bend into the back plate, while the tap cones hold that plate against the wall and prevent it rotating away. The load remains close to the wall rather than hanging from a long, flexible caddy. I have not assigned it a formal load rating—the exact result depends on the taps and wall behind them—but in this shower it comfortably carries far more than the toiletries we can fit on it.

Designed as sheet metal

The shape acknowledges how it is made. A flat blank is cut to profile and given two straight 90° bends: one forms the back plate and the other forms the front lip. There are no welded ends, folded boxes or secondary brackets. The 4 mm material supplies the stiffness; the geometry merely puts that material where it does the most work.

Long slots let water escape instead of collecting beneath bottles. The same openings can accept hooks and holders, so drainage does not require a second set of features. The front edge retains bottles but dips in front of each tap, leaving enough hand clearance to turn the handles without striking it.

The shower completes the shelf

The shelf has no end walls because the shower already has them. It spans the alcove closely enough that the tiled side walls keep bottles from escaping at either end. Adding aluminium ends would mean more manufacturing, more corners to clean and more visual bulk while duplicating something the room provides for free.

Design Philosophy

This is a permanent-quality object installed reversibly. Its strength comes from a short, obvious load path and thick material rather than an elaborate mounting system. Its capacity comes from occupying the otherwise wasted width of the shower rather than growing upward into our field of view.

Every exposed outer transition uses a generous conic curve, including the two scoops in the front lip. The curves are pleasant to touch and give a large piece of metal a calm outline without adding decoration. Two bends, one material and one mounting idea are enough. The result is expensive only once.
